British Theatre Before & After Covid
Following our groundbreaking reports into British theatre repertoire in 2013 and 2014, the British Theatre Consortium has produced a major new report on British theatre either side of the Covid pandemic, based on figures for 2019 and 2023.

Based on aggregated box office data from 139 commercial, not-for-profit and subsidised theatres throughout the country, our report asks what really happened to theatre before and after Covid.

Did theatre activity decline or did it quickly recover? What happened to drama, musicals, new work and adaptations? Did London's dominance increase or decrease, and did ticket prices go through the roof? Did the proportion of new plays written by women reduce or grow?

The answers to these and many other questions will be contained in British Theatre Before & After Covid, to be published on 26 November 2025 and available here.
